American vs English Golden Retrievers

Our friends over at Canine Weekly have written a great article about the differences between American and English Golden Retrievers. We would highly recommend reading it! But here is the low-down, quick answer.

  1. Same breed

Both are recognized as “Golden Retriever” by the AKC and other organizations. Genetically, they are the same breed. However, because lines from Europe and America rarely cross bred in the early years of the breed standard, there are some distinct differences.

  2. Coat and Color

One of the most notable differences is their coats and color. While both can have the same range from very light cream to dark red, American Golden Retrievers tend to usually be in the red range, while English Goldens are more cream colored.

  3. Structure

English Golden Retrievers tend to have blockier heads, rounder eyes, and a stockier build through the chest then their American counterparts.

  4. Health and Life Expectancy

American Golden Retrievers suffer from a cancer rate of over 60%. English Goldens are at about 39%. American Goldens have a life expectancy of about 10-11 years while English Goldens are about 12 years.

  5. Temperament

English Goldens are known for their calm demeanor. They have they same boundless energy and playfulness all Golden Retrievers are known for, but they have an internal “off-switch” that allows them to calm down when you are ready to sit. They are great snugglers!

We hope that gives you a quick insight into some of the uniquenesses of the English Golden Retriever line. We love them!
